Dieonte Miles, an all-state big man from Walton, Ky., will spend his freshman season at Xavier as a redshirt and retain four seasons of eligibility starting in 2020-21.
Miles averaged 14.7 points and 6.7 rebounds at Walton-Verona High School and was considered a three-star prospect by 247 Sports. At 6-10, he weighs only 210 pounds. He also had a scholarship offer from Northern Kentucky and was scouted by Western Kentucky and Louisville.
Xavier opened its 2019-20 season Tuesday with a 76-57 victory over Jacksonville. Starting big man Tyrique Jones played 21 minutes and recorded a double-double, and freshman Zach Freemantle and junior Jason Carter played a combined 31 minutes off the bench. The Musketeers are considered a leading contender for the Big East Conference title.
“Dieonte is a talented young man who has a very bright future,” coach Travis Steele said in the school’s release. “Our coaching staff will work very hard with him during his redshirt year to get him physically stronger and continue to develop his game at both ends of the court.
“Dieonte has a chance to be a special player, and this extra year of development will do wonders for him.”
