Matt Nieto netted the Colorado Avalanche’s first goal of the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs Saturday, a shorthanded tally in Game 2 of their first-round series vs. the Calgary Flames. The second-period goal was also the Avs’ first in more than 120 minutes of hockey.
Nieto capitalized on faulty stickwork by Calgary defenseman T.J. Brodie and ripped a shot past Mike Smith on a breakaway.
Prior to Nieto’s goal, Colorado had not scored since April 6 when Nathan MacKinnon scored 89 seconds into the second period of the Avalanche’s final regular-season game.
The goal was Nieto’s fourth in 31 playoff games and his first of 2019. All four of his regular-season goals came before the new year.
