{"id":299054,"date":"2023-12-12T17:25:57","date_gmt":"2023-12-12T17:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/?p=299054"},"modified":"2023-12-12T17:25:57","modified_gmt":"2023-12-12T17:25:57","slug":"former-ireland-and-lions-prop-syd-millar-dies-aged-89","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sportslifetale.com\/rugby-union\/former-ireland-and-lions-prop-syd-millar-dies-aged-89\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Ireland and Lions prop Syd Millar dies aged 89"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1> Former Ireland and Lions prop Syd Millar dies aged 89&#8230; with World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont leading tributes to &#8216;a giant of the game&#8217;<\/h1>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Syd Millar started his playing career with local club Ballymena<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He\u00a0was capped 37 times for Ireland and made nine Test appearances for Lions<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>He coached the Lions on their undefeated 22-match tour of South Africa in 1974<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Former Ireland and British and Irish Lions prop Syd Millar has died aged 89.<\/p>\n<p>Millar, born in Ballymena, was capped 37 times for Ireland and made nine Test appearances for the Lions in a successful playing career.<\/p>\n<p>He then coached the Lions in 1974, when they went undefeated in their 22-match tour of South Africa, and led Ireland from 1973 to 1975.<\/p>\n<p>Millar became president of the Irish Rugby Football Union in 1995 before being named chairman of the International Rugby Board in 2003. He gave up both roles in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>The Lions said in a statement: &#8216;There aren&#8217;t many people who have given as much to the Lions, or our sport, as the great Syd Millar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/11\/00\/78802219-0-Former_Ireland_and_British_and_Irish_Lions_prop_Syd_Millar_has_d-m-42_1702254052976.jpg\" height=\"822\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Former Ireland and British and Irish Lions prop Syd Millar has died aged 89<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/1s\/2023\/12\/11\/00\/78802217-0-image-a-41_1702253972319.jpg\" height=\"503\" width=\"634\"><\/p>\n<p>Millar was capped 37 times for Ireland and made nine Test appearances for the Lions<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Three tours as a player, one as a series winning coach and another as a manager. He also served as a committee member, selector and chairman. It all adds up to an amazing nine tours over six decades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;All our thoughts are with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>Millar started his playing career with local club Ballymena, who said on X &#8211; formerly known as Twitter &#8211; on Sunday: &#8216;It is with deep regret that the Board of Directors of Ballymena RFC inform members of the passing of highly esteemed member Syd Millar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;On behalf of everyone connected with Ballymena RFC we extend our sincere condolences to his daughter Lesley, sons Peter and Johnny and family.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont paid tribute to Millar as &#8216;a giant of the game on the world stage&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Former England captain Beaumont added on the official World Rugby website: &#8216;As influential in the boardroom as he was brilliant as a player, coach and manager, Syd was a natural leader and visionary, someone who cared deeply about the sport, its people, values and future.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Syd led the sport through some of its most defining moments, driving forward the expansion and development of the sport beyond its heartlands.
