Rory McIlroy flopped out of the Genesis Invitational on Friday night after failing to make the weekend at a tournament for the first time in 19 months.

The world No 7 arrived in California in reasonable early-season form but fell a long way short of the cut with rounds of 73 and 76. 

His seven-over total left him way down the 120-strong field. Justin Thomas followed his opening 77 with a 73 and missed the cut. So did US Open champion Bryson Dehambeau after a 69.

It was his first missed cut in 25 tournaments — the longest current streak on the PGA Tour

It was his first missed cut in 25 tournaments — the longest current streak on the PGA Tour — and his first since The Open at Portrush in 2019.

The four-time major winner hit only one birdie in his second round and lost strokes at 12, 14, 17 and 18, as well collecting a double-bogey six at the eighth, his penultimate hole. 

England’s Matthew Fitzpatrick was well positioned on five under at the start of his second round.
