Baylee Nothdurft wasted to his lowest weight in 18 months and Shooting For Gold made sure it wasn’t in vain after the pair combined to cap off an unbeaten preparation at Doomben on Saturday.
The 2019-20 champion jockey has had a well-documented battle with his weight but said he is feeling as good as he ever has in the saddle after making a conscious effort to prioritise his long-term health.
Riding Shooting For Gold at 55.5kg, Nothdurft was cool, calm and collected settling off a hot pace in the Open Handicap before mowing down his rivals inside the last furlong to make it three-from-three on the talented Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted-trained speedster.
It's another win for Shooting For Gold!

“He is a horse, the moment you get on him he is on the ball the whole time, he gives you so much confidence – he’s just a beast,” Nothdurft said.
“It looked tricky on paper but there was good speed early so I got three pairs back, one off the fence and it panned out perfect, he attacked the line really well.
“This campaign he is a lot more mature mentally, he is only going to get bigger and better.”

With a shot at the rich Magic Millions carnival now on their radar, Nothdurft said he was prepared to put in the hard yards to ride Shooting For Gold.
“I had to get it (weight) off during the week but I haven’t ridden that light for a year-and-a-half so it’s good, he made it worth it,” he said.
“I feel OK considering, once I have come back I have been trying to keep it under control. I got it down and did a good job with it all. I rode him at 55.5kg.”
Hoysted confirmed the four-year-old would head for a spell before being prepared for a run at the Magic Millions.
“This prep was all about getting his rating up, the end game is Magic Millions so he will go away now with a great record,” he said of his eight wins from 12 starts.
“Big credit to Baylee there that was an outstanding ride to get into the position he did.
“He knows this horse really well and has faith in his ability. We know he has that devastating turn of foot and he was able to show that again today.”
