First yearlings go under the hammer for new concept

Concept became reality for the team behind The Racing League (TRL) when the micro ownership group dived head first into purchasing yearlings at the Magic Millions Sales on the Gold Coast this week.

And TRL co-founder Steve Brown was rapt with the result after picking up five yearlings by late on Thursday, which will take part in the inaugural season later this year.

The TRL concept sees state-based stables comprising of six horses – four yearlings and two ready to race horses – go head-to-head with owners buying in through a micro ownership model.

“It’s been a bit conceptual but now we have real people on board and they can see the quality of the horses they are owning,” Brown said.

“That’s what it is all about.

“It’s about making quality horses available for everyone rather than just the wealthy.”

The five yearlings purchased came at a spend of more than $1 million at an average of over $230,000 per yearling.

The yearlings will be drafted into the four state-based teams – known as NSW Tycoons, Qld Rogues, Vic Husslers and WA Black Hearts – on a voter basis by micro owners.
