Only seven races and with the rail out 6m the track should play truly.
However I’m expecting riders will shift out into the straight looking for the fast lane near the centre of the cambered track.
There has been rain but Sunshine Coast drains well and a soft (6) deck is expected.
RACE 1 – 2YO Handicap (1200m)
The benchmark is COLLAY’S SPIRIT (1) which resumes as the only winner in the field with Ryan Maloney, but he is no superstar and Stuart Kendrick has two untrialled first starters.
FUNNY MONEY (8) is by boom sire Capitalist out of a mare that has produced a good winner in Singapore.
VETTA VELOCITA (3) hasn’t trialled but has had jumpouts and comes from a prolific winning family that includes many which have shown a liking for Sunshine Coast.
The Headwater colt NORTHERN WATER (5) had support on debut but failed and was spelled. He returns after a solid trial and should improve this preparation.
ARTIE’S DESTINY (4) won a recent trial at Toowoomba and Kevin Kemp has been having a good run of late.
BETTING STRATEGY: Watch the market
RACE 2 – Benchmark 70 Handicap (1600m)
A small field with a moderate tempo will make this tactical race with the best ride winning and the scratching of STANDING OVATION (4) makes the race even more tricky.
Kevin Kemp brings two runners from Toowoomba, last start winner KING DINISTY (2) and SPARTAN JET (3), which has won two of his past three. If they can adapt to the bigger track can make their presence felt.
ALL BUT GONE (5) has been battling away in midweeks, he is one-paced but the big track will suit and he should get a good run from an inside gate.
BETTING STRATEGY: A race to avoid
RACE 3 – Benchmark 65 Handicap (1800m)
THE CHOSEN ONE (4) showed early promise but hasn’t lived up to it however recent placings are encouraging and the engagement of Michael Rodd is a positive. Neville McBurney is a patient trainer and THE CHOSEN ONE could deliver here over 1800m on a track that suits.
EPICURIOUS (3) fought on well in a strong Saturday Benchmark 75 last start, he will find this easier and Sheriden Tomlinson’s 2kg claim helps.
DARING MAN (5) has been showing staying promise, this track suits and Michael Cahill rides middle distance horses better than most.
BETTING STRATEGY: Another race that doesn’t excite
RACE 4 – Class 4 Plate (1400m)
Natalie McCall has found the right race for RED DOULTON (8). She is now third up, has won twice here, the distance suits and on her day is a genuine Saturday class horse. The stable rarely misses on their home track, Tiff Brooker retains the mount and can repay the faith.
MR SO AND SO (6) has gone from Group 2 at Caulfield to failures in Hong Kong and is now having his fourth start for Chris Anderson, this Class 4 on a Sunday at Sunshine Coast will tell us whether he has a future.
THE DRILLER (10) disappointed last start but 1400m and a good gate help.
BETTING STRATEGY: 3 units on RED DOULTON (8) to win
RACE 5 – Maiden Handicap (1200m)
BETTER GET READY (6) has been banging on the door and placed behind subsequent winners Bundyandcoke and Triptonic last start. He will find this easier and Rob Heathcote has had a good run of late. With Michael Cahill riding from gate three he will get every chance and is the one to beat.
JOY TOO ALL (10) resumes for the lethal Vandyke/Maloney combination, has benefited from a recent trial and whilst his form last preparation was moderate the trainer will have him ready to do his best.
KARBORS (7) is resuming and Stuart Kendrick has prepared him with jumpouts, he has been trying for a while but Michael Rodd rides and from the inside gate draws to do no work.
BETTING STRATEGY: 2 units on BETTER GET READY (6) to win
RACE 6 – Fillies and Mares Class 1 (1000m)
I am always wary of horses going from Maiden to Class 1 and BOMBAY ROCKET (1) is up in weight, class and distance but Vandyke and Maloney have too good a strike rate to ignore. Won over 900m at the Gold Coast at her first start for the stable and with the tongue-tie back on has enough upside to win this moderate Class 1.
WINDSTREAM (8) got the job done in an 1100m Maiden at the Gold Coast, she drops back in trip but will be in the box seat from gate two and be strongest late.
PIANIST (5) is awkwardly drawn but she did a good job to win on debut over 800m at Ipswich. This track and distance will suit much better and with a patient ride from Michael Cahill can be saved for the last shot.
BETTING STRATEGY: Not having a bet but BOMBAY ROCKET (1) hard to beat
RACE 7 – CGE Class 1 Handicap (1000m)
MAYA BAY (5) showed talent as a younger horse when winning on debut but disappointed subsequently and has been gelded. Tony and Maddy Sears have an excellent strike rate, Jim Orman takes the ride and with blinkers on from gate one MAYA BAY will be in the box seat throughout.
XERRI (2) is another that showed promise earlier then disappointed before having the unkindest cut of all. Trained by Toby and Trent Edmonds, he has had two public trials with Brad Stewart and looks ready to go.
BETTING STRATEGY: Watching for market move on MAYA BAY (5)
BEST BET: RED DOULTON (Race 4 No 8)
NEXT BEST: BETTER GET READY (Race 5 No 6)
VALUE BET: MAYA BAY (Race 7 No 5)
Quaddie numbers are:
Race 4: 6,8
Race 5: 6,7,10
Race 6: 1,8
Race 7: 2,5
