Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Xerri looking to live up to his breeding at Sunshine Coast on Sunday

Expensive gelding Xerri has trialled nicely for his return to racing on Sunday and a chance to live up to the high early expectations placed on him.

There are few better bred horses racing in Queensland than Xerri who cost $410,000 at the 2019 Magic Millions Yearling Sales.

He is by champion sire Snitzel out of the mare Sempre Libra which is the family of Golden Slipper winner Merlene and Victoria Oaks winner Dear Demi.

Xerri will step out in an entires and geldings Class 1 (1000m) at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

It is a long way from initial plans for Xerri who was entered for the last year’s Group 1 Golden Slipper and Group 1 Australian Sires.

At his first start Xerri was unplaced behind top Queensland galloper Rothfire in February last year and then won at his next start at Doomben.

He missed the COVID truncated winter carnival and returned to have six starts in the Brisbane spring.

Xerri’s record now stands at eight starts for a win and four minor placings.

Co trainers Toby and Trent Edmonds have given the gelding every chance to be ready first-up on Sunday.

The gelding has trialled twice at the Gold Coast with the latest a close up second last week.

“His trials have been solid and it is time for him to live up to his breeding,” Toby Edmonds said.

Jockey Brad Stewart rode Xerri in both trials and will again be aboard on Sunday.

He has been riding regularly for Edmonds this season and they have combined for eight winners in recent months.

Stewart and Edmonds will be in Melbourne on Saturday for The Harrovian in the All Star Mile at Moonee Valley.

“It is an understatement to say a two state double would be nice,” Edmonds said.
