David Ortiz shooting brings well-wishes, support from players

As news spread that former Red Sox star David Ortiz had been shot in the Dominican Republic on Sunday night, the baseball world turned to social media to support the player affectionately known as “Big Papi.”

According to CNN, Ortiz was shot in the back “by a motorcyclist who approached Ortiz directly.”

The local chief of police told Dionisio Soldevila, a reporter from the Dominican Republic, that Ortiz was in stable condition. Ortiz was taken into surgery and told doctors “please don’t let me die. I’m a good man,” according to Soldevila.

CNN reported that police have detained multiple people in connection with the shooting.

Ortiz, who retired in 2016, was born in Santo Domingo, where the incident took place. The 10-time All-Star won three World Series and spent fourteen of his 20 MLB seasons with Boston.
