Baltimore Ravens tipped for Super Bowl push but not because of Lamar Jackson

The Baltimore Ravens have every chance of winning the Super Bowl because they are one of the most well-rounded teams in the NFL right now.

That is the view of former NFL stars Jason Bell and Osi Umenyiora, who insist their success is not all down to star quarterback Lamar Jackson .

The Ravens have won their last nine NFL games to claim the top seed in the AFC with just a few weeks of the regular season remaining.

Most of the talk so far this season has been about the scintillating form of Jackson, who’s running game and arm strength has led to him being named by many as the favourite for the MVP.

But in recent weeks it has been the Ravens defense that has stood up to be counted in vital wins against the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers.

The team are now 11-2 for the season and will steal home field advantage and a bye in the play-offs if they win their three remaining games.

Former NFL corner Jason Bell insists people should not only be talking about Jackson but also about the defense where the Ravens are concerned.

“Baltimore have got a great defensive co-ordinator Don Martindale and people should be talking about him as a head coach candidate,” said Bell.

“What they have done is they have emerged on defense later in the season and that is what they needed to do.

“They were playing great on offense with Lamar Jackson but they have improved at the other end.”

And Bell says the Ravens’ early trades are now showing their worth as the season progresses.

“Remember who they traded for, Marcus Peters, and he was the one who won the game against the Bills in the end with the final clutch play,” he added.

“So they have improved with their trades and they are calling great defensive plays.”

Two-time Super Bowl winner Umenyiora thinks the Ravens have found just the right balance that could see them progress in the postseason.

“A lot of people have been talking about the Ravens offense and rightly so but on defense they have massively improved and they are solid,” he added.

“At the back end they are causing lots of problems and they are bringing the pressure on the quarterback.

“Marry both of these things together and it is going to be a big problem for whoever they play against.

“This is why I think they are going to win games in the play-offs at the end of the season because of their defense.”
