Gary Lineker was forced to clarify a mistake he made when introducing the 2019 Sports Personality of the Year contender Ben Stokes.
The England cricketer is the massive odds-on favourite with the bookmakers ahead of tonight's event.
And Lineker appeared to confirm the winner before the voting had even opened.
The Match of the Day presenter introduced Stokes onto the stage to look back at his momentous year as the 'main award winner'.
Thousands noticed the slip of the tongue on social media before Lineker clarified what he meant to say.
"That was my mistake – I hope I’ve not tempted fate," the former footballer said when Stokes arrived on stage.
But social media users weren't buying the clarification.
"Oops @GaryLineker We can all switch over and watch another channel now," one said.
"Has Gary Lineker made one of the biggest gaffes ever by giving away the sports personality of the year? “Ben Stokes, major award winner," one wrote.
"Gary Lineker just given the game away as to the main award winner! Then he started backtracking," another said.
"Gary Lineker just announced Ben Stokes as the winner by mistake," a fourth added.
"Thanks @GaryLineker for already revealing the winner of #spoty," wrote one.
Stokes has received several awards this year and admitted that his incredible 12 months may not truly sink in until he retires.
He said earlier this year: "In terms of reflection, I think there will come a time where I will be able to take it all in but I don't think that will come until I retire really becomes it all comes so thick and fast. This will definitely be a summer that I will be able to look back on forever."
