Kate French has won Olympic gold in the modern pentathlon after coming back from fifth in the final event. French had put herself in prime position heading into the laser run inside the Tokyo Stadium.

The gold medal looked set to be in the bag for Annika Schleu heading into the equestrian event.

But the German suffered heartbreak as her horse refused to co-operate in the arena.

Schleu was in tears trying to control Saint Boy, but she was unable to complete her run, dropping down to last place.

That opened the door for those chasing the German for Olympic gold with French in prime position.
