Few in golf would bet against Scottie Scheffler right now – and one punter reaped the rewards of backing the American last week.

Scheffler was in sublime form to win the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass, regaining the world No 1 spot in the process. The reigning Masters champion displaces rival Jon Rahm, who at the start of the year had knocked Rory McIlroy off his perch.

The American missed the cut in the same event for 2021, and was way down in joint 55th last year, but went into Sunday's final round with a two-shot lead after a third round 65. And he finished off with a 69 to finish 17 under par overall, five clear of runner up Tyrrell Hatton.

It also meant the 26-year-old netted a cool £3.71 million, but one faithful follower wasn't too far behind him. A fan went to FanDuel Sportsbook to wager £250,000 on Scheffler to triumph at 10-1 odds.

The gamble landed him a massive £2.5 million, although he was still mercilessly mocked online, given Scheffler's odds were reportedly longer elsewhere. @XuGator wrote: "He should have shopped around. Scottie was 11-1 at Caesar’s. He gave up an extra 300,000."

It wasn't the only unique tale surrounding Scheffler to come from his week in Florida though. His 87-year-old nan, Mary, became a cult hero overnight after using a walking frame to follow her grandson around every hole of the course.

The PGA Tour tweeted a video of her walking down the fairway at Sawgrass on the final day, leaving the man himself impressed at her marathon effort: "Grandma lives about 20 minutes up the road. She turns 88 in about a week-and-a-half," he said in his victory speech.

And confirming she hadn't missed a shot as he reasserted his ascendancy on the sport, Scheffler added: "All 72 holes she walked. Even the ones from yesterday. I am so happy to have my family here"

Scheffler's bid to win a second green jacket will take place from April 6-9 to Augusta. The star has thus far resisted the temptation to up his money and join the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour.
