Police investigating as three Commonwealth Games athletes reported missing

Three members of the Sri Lankan side at the 2022 Commonwealth Games have gone missing.

A wrestler, judo star and judo coach have all been reported missing after the trio have not been seen since Monday. It's believed that the trio all surrendered their passports in the athlete's village, and as a result, they are unable to leave the UK.

The Sri Lankan team have issued a statement, and team spokesperson Gobinath Sivarajah said: "We have asked all athletes and officials to submit their passports to our respective venue officials in all the villages after the incident.

"The police are investigating and the three cannot cross the UK borders. What has happened is really unfortunate.”

There are fears the trio might have fled in hopes of not returning to Sri Lanka once the games are over. Sri Lanka is on brink of a humanitarian crisis as an economic crisis has meant medicine, fuel and food have started to run out.

All Sri Lankan athletes have been the standard 180-day visas by the government for the event.

Sri Lanka have claimed three medals so far at this year's games.

Palitha Bandara won a silver in the men's discus throw F44/64, while Dilanka Isuru Kumara and Yupun Abeykoon each won bronze in the men's 55kg weightlifting and men's 100 metres respectively.
