Tennis star Ryan Peniston booed after telling Queen’s crowd he supports Man Utd

Tennis star Ryan Peniston received a frosty reception from the Queen's crowd after he admitted he was a Manchester United fan.

Peniston, 26, has been enjoying a dream week at the Queen's Club in his first ever ATP Tour event. The Brit reached the quarter-finals on Thursday (June 16) after a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, and has been handed a wild card for Wimbledon.

It hasn't all gone his way, though. After beating Cerundolo, the Southend-end born rookie was subjected to some quickfire questions to help fans find out more about him. One of those asked was which football team he supports.

"I'm a Manchester United fan," Peniston replied, sparking loud boos from those in attendance. He then joked: "Feel sorry for me, it's ok."

While his football club allegiance may be doing him no favours, his tennis certainly has been. The world No 180 stunned top seed and world No 5 Casper Ruud, who was runner-up at the French Open last month, in the opening round.

Back-to-back victories have earned him a quarter-final shot at Serbian Filip Krajinovic on Friday (June 17). "I don't think I want to wake up from this any time soon," Peniston said.

"I thought I took a lot of confidence from the last match against Casper. I came out all guns blazing and then second set didn't go to plan.

"Francisco is a great player. I just kept fighting in the third and got over the line. I'm pretty happy about it."
