Fantasy Football Injury Updates: LeSean McCoy, Marlon Mack, Matt Breida, more RBs among key Week 8 active/inactives

We already know a handful of key running backs are “out” or “doubtful” for Week 8 (Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Le’Veon Bell, Royce Freeman, Sony Michel), but several more “questionable” RBs (LeSean McCoy, Marlon Mack, Matt Breida, Chris Thompson) are creating plenty of fantasy start ’em, sit ’em headaches. Getting the latest injury updates will be key, especially with Breida and Mack kicking off in the late afternoon and McCoy playing Monday night. Get ready to hit the waiver wire for a handcuff/sleeper RB pickup until the official active/inactives reports are in.

And we’ll be here updating this post until we get official word on these players. For more updates on banged-up TEs/WRs (Rob Gronkowski, Allen Robinson, Randall Cobb), go here. You can also follow us on Twitter @SN_Fantasy for more updates and advice.

Is LeSean McCoy playing Monday night?

McCoy is still in the NFL’s concussion protocol as of Saturday night, but because the Bills don’t play until Monday night, he doesn’t have to be cleared until Sunday. It’s unclear at this point when that will happen, so fantasy owners might have to make lineup decisions before we know for sure. Many are speculating he will get cleared since he was able to get in limited practice on Friday and Saturday, but we can’t say for sure right now.

One thing we do know is backup Chris Ivory (hamstring) wasn’t even listed on the Bills final injury report, so he’ll be good to go against the Patriots. If McCoy is out, Ivory would have low-end RB2 potential with around 15 touches. We’ve had McCoy in our RB rankings all week, and we’re not going to take him out now, but if you’re going to hold out for him, have a backup plan ready (Kenjon Barner, Marcus Murphy are your best bets for RB, any receiver from the Bills/Pats at flex).

Marlon Mack injury update

Mack (ankle) is listed as “questionable” for Indy’s late-afternoon kickoff against the Raiders, but after getting in a full practice on Friday, he seems likely to play.

As long as Mack is in, he’s a borderline RB1 in this favorable matchup, but if he’s out, Nyheim Hines would be a legit RB2 in both standard and PPR formats. Jordan Wilkins and Robert Turbin would also get touches, but the Colts have shown they like featuring Hines when Mack is out. Because this is a late-afternoon kickoff, fantasy owners should have a replacement ready if Mack is a surprise scratch.

Is Matt Breida playing in Week 8?

Breida (ankle) is once again giving fantasy owners fits, only getting in a limited practice on Friday and being listed as “questionable” for San Francisco’s late-afternoon kickoff against the Cardinals.

Breida’s availability is huge given that Arizona is by far the most generous fantasy defense to RBs, so even if he’s only able to get 10 carries, that could mean RB2-worthy numbers. Raheem Mostert would be worth using as a flex even if Breida is active, but if Breida is out, bump Mostert up to an RB2 and Alfred Morris to a flex. Breida is a true game-time decision, so if you’re going to wait until 2:55 p.m. ET for the officially inactive list to come out, make sure you have a backup ready to fill his spot if he’s inactive.

Chris Thompson injury news

For the third straight week, Thompson (ribs, knee) got in limited practices all week, but he remains “questionable” for Sunday’s early kickoff against the Giants.

Because Thompson has sat the past two games, fantasy owners shouldn’t expect him to suit up until he’s officially declared “active”. If he plays, he’ll remain a solid PPR flex, but it’s tough to trust him in standard leagues with Adrian Peterson dominating carries.

Is Sony Michel playing Monday night?

Michel (knee) was able to practice on a limited basis on Saturday, but he’s still listed as “doubtful” for New England’s Monday night matchup against Buffalo.

With Michel likely out, Kenjon Barner will split RB touches with James White. Given the matchup, Barner looks like a legit flex in standard leagues.
