Jaguars S Barry Church takes ‘full responsibility,’ says London arrest was ‘a misunderstanding’

Jaguars safety Barry Church was the only one of the four players who were reportedly arrested in London to speak with the media after the team’s loss to the Eagles on Sunday. Church said that his arrest, along with his teammates, at a London nightclub Saturday was the result of a misunderstanding.

Church and the other Jacksonville players were reportedly arrested for failing to pay their tab, but were later released with no further action taken by police.

The team and the Metropolitan Police have not disclosed the names of the players involved, but multiple reports said that Church and fellow defensive backs Ronnie Harrison, Jarrod Wilson and D.J. Hayden were the players arrested and taken into custody.

“There was definitely a misunderstanding, but as far as my actions are concerned, I take full responsibility,” Church said, via ESPN. “I don’t want to be a distraction or anything like that to my team and my teammates, but we handled it as a private matter within the team and we’ll just go from there.”

Church was the only one involved in the incident in the locker room when reporters were permitted to enter. He declined to say how long he and his teammates were detained and didn’t give details about what occurred at the nightclub located near Piccadilly Circus — an hour subway ride from Wembley Stadium, where the game was played.

“I don’t want to get into any details about that, but we were just hanging out as a team,” Church said. “That’s it.”

Church, in his ninth season in the NFL and second with the Jaguars, started the game. Harrison and Wilson also played, but Hayden missed his fifth straight contest with a toe injury.

“It’s just disappointing how it went down,” Church said. “I didn’t want to be a distraction or anything like that, but hey, it happened. I took full responsibility for it with my teammates, and we just weren’t able to pull a victory out today. It just kind of adds to it. That’s what happened.”
