What time does ‘Hard Knocks’ air tonight? How to watch, live stream Episode 1 on HBO

‘Hard Knocks’ is back for a 15th season in 2020. The NFL Films’ training camp documentary series will air as usual on HBO throughout August and early September.

The show is taking an unique approach ahead of the NFL regular season, focusing on one city, Los Angeles, and its two teams, the NFC’s Rams and and the AFC’s Chargers. The Rams will be making their second appearance with coach Sean McVay since 2016. The Chargers will be making their ‘Hard Knocks’ debut with coach Anthony Lynn.

The Rams are coming off a 9-7 season, but they missed the playoffs after winning the NFC and getting to Super Bowl 53 in the previous season. The Chargers went a disappointing 5-11 in 2019, after going 12-4 and earning a strong AFC wild-card berth in 2018.

How will the Rams recover from losing key players such as Todd Gurley, Brandin Cooks and Cory Littleton? Will rookie running back Cam Akers win the right to be featured in Gurley’s place in 2020? What will Aaron Donald do and Jalen Ramsey say to entertain? Those are some of the key questions about the Rams that should get answered.

The Chargers have a built-in favorite ‘Hard Knocks’ drama with Tyrod Taylor expected to easily win their post-Philip Rivers quarterback competition over first-round rookie Justin Herbert. There’s also the potential for wide receiver Keenan Allen to stir things up again after being displeased about his ‘NFL Top 100’ ranking. The Chargers will be more fun defensively with Joey Bosa, Derwin James, Melvin Ingram and Casey Hayward being joined by Linval Joseph, Chris Harris Jr. and rookie Kenneth Murray.

From all that, ‘Hard Knocks’ will hope that the Rams and Chargers can be as compelling combined as the far-more popular Raiders were in their final season representing Northern California in Oakland. Here’s more information on how to take in all the latest NFL training camp drama as a proxy for a lost preseason schedule.

‘Hard Knocks’ preview: Season 15

The Rams’ running back competiton and the Chargers’ quarterback situation will need to be the best sources of the on-field drama. Given the theatrics of the Raiders because of Antonio Brown and Jon Gruden, the Los Angeles teams have a very hard act to follow with any of their players or head coaches.

There’s a good chance the success and ratings of the latest season hinge on finding some hidden-gem storylines. Seeng how the teams navigate through COVID-19 safety protocols at their headquarters also will provide a new interesting twist.

On paper, the Rams and Chargers don’t sound like the best choices to feature, but the best reason to watch them is they are the only choices for televised NFL preseasn action with no presseason games.
