Alex Albon couldn’t resist a cheeky dig at the incredible contract saga enveloping Alpine and Oscar Piastri as he committed his immediate F1 future to Williams.
The British-born Thai has been rewarded for a strong year with the Grove squad with a multi-year contract. Albon and Williams seem to be the perfect match as they look to put difficult years behind them and push further up the field.
The same cannot be said for Alpine and Piastri though. The Renault-backed team, who have lost Fernando Alonso to Aston Martin for 2023, announced last night that they had taken up an option to replace the Spaniard with Piastri, their highly-rated reserve driver.

However, the Australian, who is thought to be pressing for a move to McLaren, hit back by rejecting Alpine’s announcement, insisting he wouldn’t in fact be driving for them next year.
He tweeted: “I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release late this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year.”
And Albon’s tweet to announce the continuation of his relationship with Williams followed a similar theme, albeit on a more positive note.
“I understand that, with my agreement, Williams Racing have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year. This is right and I have signed a contract with Williams for 2023. I will be driving for Williams next year. Let’s gooo @williamsracing.”

A third said: “Well this is the only right way to make an announcement in these times. You deserve it so much!!! So happy for you. Let's goooooo.” Another posted: Great to see you back and thriving in F1 Alex…..think this could be up there for tweet of the year, bravo sir.”
Meanwhile, former F1 driver Marcus Ericsson, who has been having his say on the driver market developments, posted: “Hahaha legend.”
