Lewis Hamilton to pen three-year £120m Mercedes deal this week after SPOTY win

Lewis Hamilton is set to sign a bumper new Mercedes deal worth £120m after winning his second Sports Personality of the Year award.

The F1 giant, who won his seventh championship this term, picked up the prestigious award on Sunday, beating Jordan Henderson, Hollie Doyle, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Stuart Broad and Tyson Fury.

And his 2020 is set to get even better as terms are almost agreed on a three-year, £40m-a-season deal with Mercedes.

The 35-year-old held talks with Ferrari but has always maintained his desire to stay put under Toto Wolff, who also committed himself to Mercedes last week.

Hamilton's contract talks were delayed after the driver was struck down with covid-19 in recent weeks.

The Brit will now look ahead to the 2021 championship as he looks to break Michael Schumacher's record of F1 titles.

But for now it's a festive break with his family, celebrating his historic win at last night's SPOTY awards.

"I want to say congratulations to all the incredible nominees," said Hamilton after being crowned the winner.

"I'm so proud of what they have achieved and I want to say thank you to everyone that has voted for me.

"I wasn't expecting this knowing there's so many great contenders.

"I want to say Merry Christmas to everyone – it's been such an unusual year and I want to mention all the front line workers and all the children round the world, I want you to try and stay positive through this difficult time, I'm sending you all positivity.

"Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

Hamilton won 11 of the 17 grands prix during the 2020 season, which started four months late because of the coronavirus pandemic.

He also achieved a further three places on the podium.

Hamilton previously won SPOTY in 2014 and has finished runner-up on three occasions.
