Mick Schumacher gets big hug from mum after mastering the wet like his dad

Offbeat news from the world of sport

Mick Schumacher received a big hug from his mum Corinna after mastering the wet in Canada just like his dad.

The son of seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher claimed sixth place on the starting grid for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. He and Haas team-mate Kevin Magnussen both achieved impressive finishes in qualifying, despite the stormy weather conditions on Saturday.

After finishing the qualifying session, Schumacher was seen greeting his mum at the track, giving her a massive hug as the pair smiled, before he ran off towards the Haas team tent at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Stormy weather had caused chaos for the competitors during qualifying, with the entire session taking place with water on the track. As a result, the drivers used wet and intermediate tyres to complete their laps.

Despite the weather, Schumacher picked up his best qualifying position of the season so far, having struggled so far in 2022. The 23-year-old German remains without a single point in F1 since making his debut at the start of last year.

He is currently 19th in the Drivers' Championship, with his best finish of the season coming in the opening race in Bahrain as he finished 11th overall.

Ahead of next season, Schumacher's spot on the F1 grid has come under threat, with former driver Christian Danner even warning him that he is "not attractive" to other teams.

Danner's comments came after Schumacher had been involved in a number of costly crashes this season, with his accidents in Saudi Arabia and Monaco costing a total of £1.64million.

He will start the Canadian Grand Prix in sixth, though, one place behind teammate Magnussen, who is currently 12th in the Drivers' Championship with 15 points after eight races.

After replacing Nikita Mazepin ahead of the start of the season, the Danish driver has collected a pair of ninth place finishes as well as fifth at the season opener in Bahrain.

Max Verstappen will start on pole in Montreal after qualifying first ahead of Spanish duo Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz.
