Romain Grosjean reveals burns to his hands after having bandages removed in recovery update

Formula One driver Romain Grosjean has revealed the damage that his fiery crash in the Bahrain Grand Prix left to his hands after having the dressing from his burns removed.

Eleven days after suffering one of the worst accidents in recent F1 memory, Grosjean expressed his delight at having the dressing wraps removed from the burns on his right hand, revealing the damaged skin that he suffered when his Haas exploded into a ball of fire two weeks’ ago after colliding with an Armco barrier at 137mph.

Grosjean’s injuries have meant that he is unable to compete in this weekend’s 2020 season finale in Abu Dhabi, which would have been his final race with the American team before leaving at the end of the championship.

The Frenchman did harbour hopes of recovering in time to return to the cockpit, but the injuries to his hands have prevented a final farewell and, with Haas selecting youngster Pietro Fittipaldi to deputise for him, Grosjean remained at home in Switzerland with his family.

However, ahead of the weekend the 34-year-old was able to deliver some good news after having the large bandages removed from his right hand, allowing him to post a thumbs up photograph on Instagram. He also showed the extent of the damage, with his hands halfway towards a full recovery as he still needs to keep the bandaging on his more-damaged left hand.

“Loads of creaming all day long but it feels so good to see it in such good shape.

“Waiting for my left hand to recover now.”

Grosjean also revealed the special helmet design that he hoped to wear for his F1 farewell, with his three children behind the unique colour pattern that he had prepared for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend.

“This is the most beautiful helmet I could ever imagine,” he said on Instagram.

“It was created by Sacha, Simon & Camille for my last @f1 race in Abu Dhabi.

“I will try to give it a ride in the future as it’s far too beautiful to stay at home unused!”
