Latrell Mitchell pleads guilty to firearms charge after camping trip

Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell has pleaded guilty to a firearms charge after a video was posted to social media showing another NRL player, Josh Addo-Carr, shooting a rifle at a NSW mid-north coast property.

Mitchell, 23, and Addo-Carr, 25, were each given $1000 public health fines in April for engaging in non-essential travel, after a dozen people gathered at Mitchell's property near Taree and were shown in photos sitting around a campfire.

Both matters were mentioned at Taree Local Court on Tuesday, with Mitchell's lawyer entering a guilty plea. Mitchell, who did not attend on Tuesday, will be sentenced on November 9.

Addo-Carr did not enter a plea and his case will return to court in September.

The NRL proposed to give each man a $50,000 fine over the camping trip.

In a statement on social media after the footage emerged, Addo-Carr said he travelled to his friend's property because some of his family members were "going through a really tough time at the moment".

"I got in contact with Latrell to go out to his private property to connect to our culture again and try to put a smile on their faces and have a bit of fun as well," he said.

"I can’t wait to go out there and finally play some footy. I’m really sorry from the bottom of my heart."

In his own statement, Mitchell said the gathering was a "little bit of a slip up" but he had been at the property with his family for weeks practising social distancing.

He apologised, saying he didn't intend to break any rules or hurt anyone, but "couldn't turn down the brothers in a time of need".

Addo-Carr previously said he intends to fight the $1000 public health fine he was given.

Under COVID-19 restrictions at the time, residents in NSW were not allowed to leave their home "without reasonable excuse".
