Titans make call on Fifita arrest

Gold Coast Titans recruit David Fifita will not be sanctioned by his new club following his arrest in December.

Police arrested the 20-year-old after allegations of trespassing at a Gold Coast home on December 27th.

As revealed by The Courier-Mail’s Travis Meyn, Fifita was invited to a Clear Island Waters house by a woman, but was confronted by her father who called police upon entering the property.

According to the report, Fifita was cleared of any wrongdoing after presenting evidence he had been invited to the Clear Island Waters house.

Speaking to media on Tuesday, Titans coach Justin Holbrook confirmed he had talked to Fifita about the incident.

“It’s not good, but it’s been resolved now,” Holbrook said.

“We’ve got to move on now.”

In November 2019, Fifita spent two nights behind bars after he allegedly hit security guard Dani Irawan at a nightclub in Bali.

The second-rower required knee surgery last year, but has recovered well and is expected to feature in round one of the 2021 premiership.

“He’s training well and has done a great job with his rehab,” Holbrook said.

“It’s always hard when you’re a player in rehab but he’s done a great job and integrated into the full squad.”

In July 2020, Fifita signed a three-year contract with the Titans worth approximately $3.5 million, making him one of the highest-paid players in the NRL.

He has represented the Queensland Maroons and played 44 games for the Brisbane Broncos after making his first-grade debut in 2018.

Meanwhile, Holbrook denied anyone at the Titans has spoken with Melbourne Storm veteran Cameron Smith, who recently moved to the Gold Coast with his family which raised speculation he was eyeing a move to the club.

“I haven’t got a further update on Cam Smith,” Holbrook said. “We haven’t planned on having him here.

“Everyone talks about the convenience of it, the fact he’s living here and the kids are going to school here. I understand the heavy speculation around it but that’s all it is.

“I can’t tell you anything. I’ve never spoken to him.

“I’m happy with who we’ve got, but if things change and all of a sudden he’s desperate to play and we can fit him in then we’ll have a conversation.

“At the moment, the fact I haven’t spoken to him shows I’m okay with who we’ve got. If it changes it changes, but I’ve got no plan on it changing.”

For their first fixture of the 2021 season, the Titans are scheduled to face the New Zealand Warriors at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday, March 13th.
