What heartbroken Brett Morris told teammates in devastated Roosters dressing room

Gut-wrench. Agony. Heartbreak.

It was all there inside the Roosters’ dressing room on Saturday night when it was first realised champion winger Brett Morris’ career was over.

On Sunday scans confirmed the Roosters star suffered an ACL tear against the Knights in Newcastle. But the atmosphere on Saturday night revealed the anguishing result long before the scan could.

Reports have emerged of the emotional scenes from within the Roosters’ shed at McDonald Jones Stadium after the 38-4 win, which included State of Origin forward Lindsay Collins also suffering a season-ending injury.

Morris was widely tipped to hang up the boots at the end of this year, his contract ending at the end of 2021. But cruel fate means he won’t get to go out the way champions deserve to.

That is why the Roosters’ sheds were a haunting sight to see, according to insiders.

“Speaking to people at the Roosters over the course of the last 24 hours, they say that dressing room last night – and you guys covered it last night – the emotion in that dressing room,” Fox League’s James Hooper said.

“This footage of them right there when Josh came in and embraced Brett. In all likelihood Brett feared that he had played his last game of rugby league.

“It was as emotional as rugby league gets. There was a sliding doors moment where you had Josh embracing Brett and Joseph Suaalii, this 17-year-old kid who is the next generation, sitting only metres away and taking it all in.

“Brett Morris spoke superbly when Trent Robinson and all the players came in and sat around him and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves also spoke as well on the back of that.

“In typically selfless Brett Morris style, he didn’t want to make it about him. He just said to the group afterwards what a privilege and an honour it was to captain the club.”

It was his first game as captain after 14 years at the highest level.

The Daily Telegraph reported Monday staff inside the dressing room, including billionaire chairman Nick Politis, were also tearing up as Josh Morris did

The report revealed Brett Morris was helped to his car in the stadium’s parking lot before the brothers did the two-hour drive back to Sydney together.

Roosters coach Trent Robinson told reporters on Saturday evening: “Shattering is the word. It was a really, really tough night for us … it’s one of the proudest and worst sheds I’ve been in.

“We’ve got a group of guys that really care for each other and love playing together and you’ve got a guy that’s a legend of our game, one of the best wingers we’ve seen, and he’s possibly just finished his career.

“It’s extremely flattening. The game pales in significance to how you feel about Brett and Lindsay.

“It’s a sad night for us but no-one ever gets a fairytale. Jake (Friend) didn’t get one, Brett didn’t get one. But they did get fairytales in the way the way their career was played.”

Footage from inside the Roosters changeroom after the game showed Morris sitting down with ice on his knee, looking utterly dejected.

The veteran winger broke down in tears when he shared a lengthy embrace with his twin brother, Roosters centre Josh, as the heartbreaking scenes devastated the rugby league community.
