Andy Robertson says Liverpool were unable to ‘get near’ Real Madrid in the last 10-15 minutes and gave away ‘cheap’ goals in their Champions League tie on Tuesday night.
Liverpool suffered a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final following a brace from Vinicius Junior and a goal from Marco Asensio.
Robertson believes Liverpool were ‘punished’ for a slow start and says it’s ‘do or die’ in the next leg as they fight to keep their European dream alive.

Robertson reflected in Liverpool’s performance after the game, saying: ‘We didn’t start great, we gave away too many cheap balls, we went quiet in the game.
‘It took us a wee while to get going, which at this level we can’t do. In the first half we got punished for it.’
He added: ‘The goals were cheap from our point of view and then you find yourself 2-0 down.’

Roberts did, however, praise Mohamed Salah for scoring an away goal, but admitted Jurgen Klopp’s side were simply ‘not at the races’.
He said: ‘I thought we came out well and got the crucial goal. Obviously if it ended 2-1 you wouldn’t be happy but you would be ok.
‘Then you just open up the other end. 3-1, it’s tough but we probably got what we deserved tonight.
‘We weren’t at the races but the only positive is we got an away goal. Lets see if that will be crucial or not. But next week we need to play a lot better than we did this week.
‘Our reaction was good. The back-end of the second half we were ok and the second half we were good.

However, he did credit Mo Salah for providing Liverpool with an away goal in the 51st minute
‘We got the goal through Mo and like you said, 2-1 you’re right in the tie and right in the game. It’s just disappointing the lose the next one.
‘Then the last 10-15 minutes we couldn’t really get close to them. They were really good at keeping the ball and killing the game.
‘They’ve got so many experienced players like Modric and they can do that so easily. Unfortunately we just couldn’t get near the ball to get any more chances going up the other end.’
Liverpool will head into the second leg at home next Wednesday having to score at least twice.
Klopp’s side will also have to prevent Madrid from scoring to stand any chance of progressing to the Champions League semi-finals.
Robertson referred to the second leg as a ‘do or die’ scenario and insisted is team-mates were up for the challenge.
