Angel Gomes breaks silence with heartfelt letter after Manchester United exit

Angel Gomes has sent his best wishes to everyone he worked with during his ‘beautiful’ 14-year stay at Manchester United and declared that he’s ready to take the ‘next step in his career’ as he prepares to join Lille.

The 19-year-old allowed his deal to run down at Old Trafford and rejected United’s offer of a new £25,000-a-week contract to pursue a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Chelsea were initially frontrunners to sign Gomes and looked set to wrap up an agreement after director Marina Granovskaia held advanced discussions with the young midfielder.

But little progress was made over a potential switch to Stamford Bridge and Ligue 1 outfit Lille are now closing in on a five-year deal for the England Under-20 international.

It’s understood Lille will send Gomes on a one-year loan to Boavista in order to guarantee first-team football next season.

Until now, Gomes has remained tight-lipped over his departure from United, apart from a short message on social media after Mason Greenwood dedicated his goal against Brighton to the midfielder.

But the teenager broke his silence on Tuesday afternoon as he shared a video montage along with an emotional letter on Instagram in which he expressed his gratitude towards United’s staff, players and fans for their support down the years.

‘It’s took me a while because it’s not been easy to put my emotions into words,’ Gomes said.

‘Sadly the time has come to end a beautiful chapter that has been my life for 14 years.

‘Being from Salford, Manchester United is all I have ever known. I went from playing on my estate, pretending to be Wayne Rooney to being in the academy and doing the same.

‘May 21st 2017 I made my Premier League debut for the club of my dreams aged 16 replacing the legend himself “Wayne Rooney”.

Though Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and United were keen to convince Gomes to stay, it’s clear there were no hard feelings between the parties and the club thanked the youngster for his service in an official statement last month.

‘Manchester United can confirm that Angel Gomes has not taken up the offer of a new contract and has, therefore, left the club,’ it said.

‘The 19-year-old joined the Reds at a very young age and worked his way through the ranks before becoming the first player born in the 2000s to represent the first team, as a substitute for Wayne Rooney in the final game of the 2016/17 season, against Crystal Palace.

‘It meant he became the youngest player since Duncan Edwards to make his senior debut for the club, soon after being awarded the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award.

‘The attacking midfielder made 10 senior appearances in total for the Reds – three of them starts, which all came in this season’s Europa League.

‘His final outing came in the 4-0 defeat of Norwich City at Old Trafford in the Premier League in January.

‘Everybody at Manchester United would like to wish Angel the very best of luck for the future and thank him for his efforts for the club.’
