Antonio Conte ‘would consider’ an incredible move to Manchester United if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lost his job as head coach, according to reports. However, there are few Premier League roles that the Italian would be open to because he apparently only wants a ‘winning project’.

Conte resigned as head coach at Inter Milan in the summer despite guiding the Nerazzurri to their first Serie A title since 2010.

The 52-year-old felt that Inter could not match his ambitions. The club ended up selling several key players following his departure, including wing-back Achraf Hakimi and striker Romelu Lukaku.

Conte was apparently close to becoming Jose Mourinho’s successor at Tottenham but chose not to take the job.

Spurs eventually appointed Nuno Espirito Santo following a chaotic search for a new manager.

Former Chelsea coach Conte remains without a job and Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio believes he would only consider a return to the Premier League if it was to a club set up for immediate success.

Di Marzio says that would rule out Arsenal and Spurs but could put United in the mix if they decided to part ways with Solskjaer, who suffered another disappointing European defeat on Tuesday night.

Asked if Conte will return to England, Di Marzio told Sky Sports: “I don’t know. I think Antonio wants to win.

“He will accept only a winning project. I don’t think Antonio will consider Arsenal because they are not strong enough to immediately win something.

“That’s why he said no to Tottenham. I think that Antonio would only consider a move to Manchester United if that opportunities arrives.

“That’s not from contacts at all from Manchester United but I know some United fans would like to see him on the bench. I think Antonio would like to, too.

“We will see if he goes back to the Premier League but it will be in a winning project.”

Ten-man United were stunned 2-1 by Swiss side Young Boys in the first match of their Champions League campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored for the third time since his sensational return to Old Trafford but David Wagner’s side completed a remarkable comeback.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka was sent off 10 minutes before half-time. Moumi Ngamaleu equalised in the 66th minute before Theoson Siebatcheu scored the winner in the fifth minute of injury time.

It is the latest disappointment in Europe for Solskjaer, who failed to mastermind a Europa League final victory over Villarreal in May. The Norwegian remains without a trophy since replacing Mourinho in December 2018.

A big-spending summer, including the acquisition of Ronaldo, has increased the pressure on Solskjaer to deliver success.

The Old Trafford transfer hierarchy spent nearly £130million on new arrivals during the transfer window.

Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton have joined alongside Ronaldo.
