Arsenal could sign another Real Madrid star after Martin Odegaard transfer

Transfer update: Latest on Odegaard, Lingard and Rose

Arsenal appear to be closing in on a loan deal for Martin Odegaard. The Real Madrid star is nearing a move to the Emirates Stadium after choosing the Gunners over Real Sociedad and Ajax. But he may not be the only Los Blancos star set to rock up in the capital, with reports in Spain recently suggesting they’re keen on recruiting Vinicius Jr as well.

Arsenal have seen Emile Smith Rowe sparkle in the No 10 role of late, helping the club to move on from the Mesut Ozil saga.

But, despite that, Mikel Arteta is ready to bring Odegaard to west London.

It’s been a difficult season for the Norway international, who has been restricted to just seven appearances in La Liga after a successful spell at Sociedad last term.

But Arsenal are hopeful he’ll provide them with a creative focal point, that will in turn lead to more goals for the likes of Willian, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette up top.

Odegaard has been tipped for the top throughout his career, ever since moving to Madrid on wages of £50,000-a-week as a 15-year-old.

And he’s not the only Madrid player on their radar – if recent reports from Spain are to be believed.

Spanish website OkDiario said in the week that Arsenal were ‘in the frame’ to sign Vinicius Jr, who will be allowed to depart the Bernabeu at the end of the season.

Real want to sell the Brazil international to raise funds for Kylian Mbappe, who has long been earmarked as a priority transfer target.

And the Gunners, it seems, are ready to pounce.

The report says they reached out to Vinicius’ agent last summer about a deal, only to be told the 20-year-old would be staying in Spain with Madrid for another year at least.

And while Liverpool are also keen on the Brazilian, who has scored just two goals this season, Arsenal could feasibly be his next destination.

After all, Arsenal and Los Blancos have a good relationship.

They were happy to do business back in 2006, brokering a swap deal involving Julio Baptista and the late Jose Antonio Reyes.

Madrid and Arsenal also sat down over Mesut Ozil in 2013, with the Germany international moving to the Emirates following the arrival of Gareth Bale.

And they’ve recently secured two separate loan deals over Dani Ceballos, who appears to have convinced Odegaard into moving to England.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal star Martin Keown has expressed a belief Odegaard’s arrival could be bad news for Ceballos.

“I’m assuming Arsenal are all over it. (Odegaard) brings that quality into the midfield. It’s an area Arsenal need to strengthen,” Keown said.

“Does that mean Ceballos will go? He’s on loan as well.

“Is he going to get football? Real Madrid may be concerned, he hasn’t played that much so far.”

Ceballos recently talked up Odegaard, with the Spain international saying: “Young players need to play regularly.

“At Real Madrid, I needed to know that I would have equal opportunities. I was obsessed with playing again.

“I wasn’t getting minutes, but I realised it was best to work and reverse the situation and be important [with another club].

“If I do this [go on loan], I’ll play again. It couldn’t have been any clearer.

“I can tell you what happened to me at Madrid.

“I don’t know exactly what will happen with Martin Odegaard, but it is obvious that any player who wants to succeed at Madrid is going to grab the opportunity he has.”
