Arsenal are unlikely to convince Martin Odegaard to sign on a permanent deal despite “issues” with Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, reckons Manchester United legend Andy Cole. Odegaard joined Arsenal on a six-month loan in January after falling out of favour at the Bernabeu. The midfielder made just nine appearances for Real in the first half of the campaign.

Odegaard has scored on his last two outings for Arsenal, firing in a long-range effort against Olympiacos on Thursday before a deflected strike in the north London derby win over Tottenham on Sunday.

The Norway international has become a regular under Mikel Arteta and is starting to show why the Gunners boss was so keen to bring him to the Emirates.

Odegaard was not happy with the lack of game time under Zidane.

But Cole still cannot see Real letting the 22-year-old leave on a permanent deal this summer.

“[Odegaard is a baller]. He’s technically very, very gifted,” Cole said on talkSPORT.

“There’s talk of Arsenal trying to bring him to the Emirates [on a permanent deal] in the summer. I would be surprised.

“I would be surprised if Real sell him. I know he’s had a few issues with Zidane.

“They’re not sure if Zidane will be there next season, so that’ll be interesting.

“I’m looking at it there and the Arsenal fans are loving [Odegaard].

“[Arsenal have] real talented kids, big futures ahead of them.”

Arteta was full of praise for Odegaard following his first 90 minutes in the Premier League on Sunday.

Arteta said: “He’s got real stamina and he’s so talented, but his work-rate is incredible. Not only that, he’s intelligent.

“The timing of his runs, when he presses, his body shape.

“I’m really impressed and he had an incredible performance today. He’s giving us something different and it’s making us better.”

Meanwhile, Odegaard recently spoke about how he has felt comfortable at Arsenal since joining in the winter window.

“I have felt at home since the first day, I am happy to be here and feel great,” Odegaard said.

“The mentality in this team is great. Very pleased with everything. We showed the spirit in the team and the way we back each other.

“If one player makes a mistake then we react. That is what it is about, being a team. When one player makes a mistake you have to strike back as a team.”
