Arsenal star Willian is lucky no fans are allowed inside stadiums – Gabriel Agbonlahor

Arsenal: Was Willian a bad signing?

Arsenal star Willian has been slammed by Gabriel Agbonlahor in the wake of his poor performance against Southampton on Saturday. The Brazil international has failed to live up to expectations at the Emirates Stadium since arriving from Chelsea on a free transfer. And Agbonlahor thinks the Samba star is lucky no supporters are currently allowed inside stadiums.

Arsenal were poor against Southampton on Saturday, with Mikel Arteta’s side flat in defeat at St Mary’s.

And Willian was one of the worst players on the pitch, with the Brazil international producing an anonymous performance.

It was the latest bad display from the Brazil international, who only arrived from Chelsea on a free transfer back in the summer.

And talkSPORT pundit Agbonlahor thinks Willian should consider himself lucky no fans are currently allowed inside stadiums, saying: “Players like Willian are getting away with the fact there are no fans because I know what Arsenal fans are like.

“They would be giving the treatment that Xhaka got at certain times because of the way he’s not interested and not doing anything for the team.

“You know what fans are like, when they’re in stadiums, they don’t hold back.”

Fellow pundit Tony Cascarino believes Willian is just as bad as Alexis Sanchez was during his disastrous 18-month spell at Manchester United.

“It’s very difficult to not criticise Arsenal,” he said.

“I say that because I think Arteta is on the right path but there has to be some decisions made at that football club.

“One of them is [Granit] Xhaka because I don’t think he’s good enough. There are too many fouls and he’s giving away too many balls.

“The form of Willian has been extraordinary at how poor he’s been.

“He’s Alexis Sanchez at Man United poor since he’s gone to the club.”

Arteta refused to criticise Willian and Nicolas Pepe after the match against Southampton, insisting the club would give them every chance to turn things around.

“They try to give their best,” he said.

“The intention and willingness is there and after the decision making, the final pass is the end product and that’s the hardest thing in football. We’re going to keep supporting them as much as we can.”

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson also expressed his disappointment with the Gunners’ result against Southampton, criticising Arteta for playing a weaker team.

“I don’t know what he’s doing, they’re not going to win the league, they’re not going to get in the top four of the Premier League unless they went on one of the best runs in the history of the league,” he told Sky Sports.

“This is the one that made Arteta last time around, he came to Arsenal, he had a great semi-final and a great final [in the FA Cup].

“And I honestly can’t believe it, this is a more important game than the midweek league game.

“They’re not getting relegated and they’re not getting in the top four.

“You don’t really want to end up getting sixth or whatever again and then you play in the Europa League on Thursdays, that just sends them back.

“So for me, bad decision.”
