Arsenal remain optimistic over the possibility of signing Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid this summer, either in the form of another loan deal or a permanent switch, according to reports. The 22-year-old impressed during his six-month spell at the Gunners after joining the club on a temporary basis in the January transfer window.

His arrival at the Emirates Stadium successfully addressed Arsenal’s need for an additional creative spark, with Mikel Arteta a huge admirer of the midfielder’s impressive leadership qualities and ability to pull the strings in attack.

Odegaard played in all but four of the club’s Premier League matches during his time in north London, chipping in with a goal and two assists in the process.

Arsenal have been tipped to launch a permanent approach for his services ahead of next season, but Carlo Ancelotti’s return to Real appears to have diminished their prospects of securing a deal.

The former Everton boss is reportedly prepared to give Odegaard the opportunity to prove himself at the Bernabeu, suggesting that the 13-time European champions could look to keep hold of their man for at least another year.

As a result of the situation, the Gunners switched their focus to landing Norwich City talisman Emiliano Buendia, but were rebuffed in their attempts to pry him away from Carrow Road.

The Argentina international is now poised to join Aston Villa, who saw a bid in the region of £33million accepted by the Canaries before agreeing personal terms with the player and thrashing out the formalities.

It seems as though Arsenal could be set to respond to their latest transfer setback by going all out to pursue a move for Odegaard in the coming weeks and months.

He remains the club’s top target, with technical director Edu still convinced that a deal can eventually be struck with Real, according to football.london.

The report claims that Arsenal were ‘seriously interested’ in bringing Buendia to the capital, but the Norwich man was swayed by the prospect of joining Villa, who tabled an attractive package with a clear pathway on how he will be utilised at the club.

Despite losing out to the west Midlands side, the Gunners believe that a successful approach for Odegaard is still a real possibility.

However, the former Heerenveen man is under contract at Real until the summer of 2023 and it remains to be seen whether he will be prepared to call time on his career in the Spanish capital.

Arteta has already underlined his desire to sign Odegaard in time for the new season, recently admitting that the wheels could be set in motion by the end of this month.

“We have a very clear and strong opinion on what we would like to do,” said Arteta. “He’s not our player. We will have discussions in the next few weeks.

“And respect first of all because he’s a Real Madrid player, and we will have those communications.

“We’ve tried to make everything that we could to get Martin performing for the team, which I think he’s done. And he’s adapted really well to our way of playing and to our football club.

“And hopefully we have given him as well the hope and the feeling that it could be a good place for him.”
