Mesut Ozil’s departure from Arsenal would be the fifth time the Gunners have allowed a big star leave for free in recent years.
Ozil looks destined to leave the Gunners having been left out of Mikel Arteta’s squad for the first half of the season.
The World Cup winning midfielder is out of contract at Arsenal in the summer and is now available to talk to overseas clubs over a summer move.
Ozil’s representatives are believed to be in talks with a number of clubs, including Fenerbahce and DC United, over a deal.
Arsenal would not receive any cash for his move, though the Gunners are eager to get Ozil’s £350,000 per week wage packet off their books.
But it’s not the first time the Premier League giants have allowed a major star to depart without receiving a fee.
Alexis Sanchez left in January 2018 for no cost, though Arsenal did receive Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Manchester United as part of the deal.
Distraught Arsenal fans broken over Mesut Ozil moving to Fenerbahce after ‘toxic’ saga
Sanchez had shone at the Emirates, regularly amongst Arsenal’s best players, though struggled following his move to Old Trafford.
The Gunners waved goodbye to Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla in the summer that followed, with both midfielders having been influential during their time in north London.
Aaron Ramsey was the next big-name to leave on a free having joined Juventus in the summer of 2019, with Arsenal now set to make the same decision when it comes to Ozil.
