Aymeric Laporte breaks down in tears on the pitch after winning title with City

Aymeric Laporte was spotted bawling his eyes out during Manchester City’s title celebrations.

City went into the game against Chelsea already knowing they were champions after Arsenal’s defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Therefore, the match against the Blues was more of a celebration than a competitive affair, which had an end-of-season feel to it.

Despite Pep Guardiola making nine changes, City still comfortably saw off Chelsea’s expensive collection of flops thanks to an early goal from Julian Alvarez. After the game, once the pitch had been cleared following a mass pitch invasion, the players got their hands on the trophy before celebrating with the fans.

City’s final home of the season could also mark the end of an era, with several high-profile players potentially heading for the exit door, including İlkay Gundogan and Laporte.

The latter, who has been at City since 2018, suggested he may have played his last game at the Etihad after being caught sat on the turf struggling to hold back the tears rather than joining in with the celebrations.

Despite starting recent Premier League matches, including the Chelsea game, Laporte has struggled for regular game time this season, making 27 appearances across the campaign.

His demeanour after the game confirmed to many fans that he will be saying an emotional goodbye to City this summer.

One City fan said: “Hopefully he is not leaving, he has been a massive player for this club.”

Another added: “Every beautiful story ends one way or the other. Heads up and move on.” A third declared: “Defo leaving, unfortunately.”

A fourth agreed: “Because he's leaving.” A hopeful fifth added: “Hopefully it’s not because it’s his last season.”

Last month, it was reported that City will not stand in the 28-year-old's way if he wishes to leave the Etihad this summer in pursuit of regular first-team football.
