Barcelona fans and club legends flock to Nou Camp as Lionel Messi bids farewell

Barcelona fans have gathered in their numbers at the Nou Camp to bid farewell to Lionel Messi.

The club’s all-time top scorer has departed the Catalans, after first arriving as a youth player at the age of 13.

Whilst fans waited outside, many with number ten on their backs, the Argentine legend was giving a tearful farewell speech as current team-mates and club legends watched on.

Messi's wife and children were also sat in the front row to offer their support.

Speaking to the press the 34-year-old stated he was willing to remain at the club and had committed his future.

He said: “This year my family and I were convinced we were going to stay here, that is what we all wanted more than anything. We were at home, and we thought we’d be staying here in Barcelona.

"But today, I have to say goodbye to all of this.”

Messi declared the city was his home and admitted his desire to return one day.

Due to La Liga regulations on player registrations, Barca cannot offer their talisman a new deal because of the club’s financial situation, despite an agreement between the player and the club being reached.

Since making his first team debut in 2004, he has scored 672 goals in 778 games, winning honours including four Champions Leagues, ten La Liga and seven Copa Del Reys.

As well as this, he has also been handed the Ballon d’Or on six occasions, as he has reached the very of world football.

During the summer, he also lifted his first international trophy, captaining Argentina to Copa America glory.

Messi stated the last year has been difficult without the fans and was full of praise for the support they have shown him

He said: “I’m so grateful for all the love that everyone has shown me because I’ve had some such great moments here over the years, some bad ones too but the love people have shown me has always been the same.”

PSG looks like Messi’s next destination, but he weren’t in any rush to confirm the move.
