Benfica B goalkeeper Samuel Soares scored a once-in-a-lifetime goal from outside of his own box on Monday.
The shot-stopper found his side trailing Trofense 1-0 in Segunda Liga, the second division of Portuguese football. But a moment of genius in the 65th minute saw him take matters into his own hands as he controlled the ball well outside his area and punted it forward.
Soares' sheer power on the strike suggested he aimed for goal, as his effort flew over the opposition goalkeeper, struck the underside of the crossbar and went in with the velocity of a ballistic missile.

He celebrated by charging towards the centre-circle, waving on his teammates and running back to his goal as disbelief gripped the entire stadium. And his equalising goal even helped spark a stunning comeback as Benfica went on to win 2-1.

Explaining his worldy strike after the game, Soares said: “I saw that their goalkeeper was one step ahead and, having the wind in favour, I decided to take a risk. It went well, it is something that will remain etched in the memory of many ”.
Fans on social media were certainly in agreement, with many having witnessed goalkeepers score before but none as incredible as Soares’ thunderbolt.
One bewildered fan tweeted: “Lord have mercy, he launched that,” while another pointed out: “Wow he literally was trying to score and did. Amazing power and accuracy."
A third ecstatic Twitter user added: “Puskas award worthy,” and a fourth pleaded: “What did I just watch.”
