Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has lashed out at Olivier Giroud on social media, laughing off comparisons with his compatriot by saying “you don’t compare Formula 1 with karting”.
Benzema was an integral part of a Los Blancos team which won four Champions League titles between 2014 and 2018 and his great form has continued this season.
The 32-year-old has scored 19 goals and provided nine assists in all competitions, but he has not been selected for the last two major international tournaments over a legal dispute with former France teammate Mathieu Valbuena, whom Benzema is accused of blackmailing.
The France Football Federation recently confirmed that Benzema’s international career is over, meaning Olivier Giroud could continue to be selected as a striking option for Didier Deschamps’ team.
The Chelsea forward was an integral part of the squads which reached the final of Euro 2016 and won the World Cup in 2018, though he did not score as Les Bleus went on to lift football’s most coveted trophy in Russia.
And Benzema believes Giroud simply is not on his level, telling his followers on Instagram Live: “You don’t compare Formula 1 with karting, and I am being nice. Next…I know that I am Formula 1.
“It works because he is there, that is the only reason. It won’t be spectacular, he won’t do something amazing, but he has his thing. Aside from that, does everyone like the way he plays? I don’t know.”
