Borussia Dortmund ‘unlikely to sign Manchester United’s Anthony Elanga in January’, despite rumours the Swedish winger was possibly on his way to the Bundesliga in a loan move

  • Reports claim Borussia Dortmund will not sign Anthony Elanga during January
  • The Man United winger was rumoured to be joining the German club this month
  • Elanga, 20, could still be of interest to Everton as he searches for game time
  • The Swedish winger has fallen out of favour with Erik ten Hag at Man United

Borussia Dortmund are unlikely to sign Anthony Elanga on loan from Manchester United in the January transfer window, despite rumours linking the Swedish winger with the Bundesliga.

Earlier this week, it was reported that Dortmund were keen on a short-term move for the 20-year-old player, who has risen from Man United’s youth system.

However, Erik ten Hag had not yet approved a potential loan move, and now Sky Germany reporter Sven Westerschulze has tweeted to say he believes that the German club are not likely to try and sign Elanga in the coming days, either on a permanent transfer, or as a loan deal.

Edin Terzic’s Dortmund were unlikely to be very active during the January transfer window, having already acquired Union Berlin’s right-back Julian Ryerson for €5m (£4.4m).

The club currently sit sixth in the Bundesliga as it returns from its extended break, while they are also preparing for a pair of Champions League knock-out ties with Premier League side Chelsea.

Dortmund have a history of working with talented young players to increase their confidence and ability at the top level of football, with recent success stories including Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham among others.

It is thought that Everton were also keen in a pursuit of Elanga, which could see the winger, who has nine national caps for Sweden, join up with Frank Lampard’s men as they bid to fight off relegation from the English top flight.

Despite 47 appearances for the club since May 2021, Elanga has fallen out of favour at Man United amid their wealth of attacking options, which were limited even more following the emergence of 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho.

The 20-year-old Swede is thought to be exploring the idea of playing time away from Old Trafford, as he has been used as a substitute more often than not when ten Hag involves him with Man United’s pursuit of four possible trophies this season.

Man United themselves are looking ahead to the summer, with a new Sportsmail report that they are keen on snapping up Tottenham’s Harry Kane amid a search for a new No. 9.

Ten Hag’s side have a league clash with Arsenal on Sunday, before both legs of their League Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest sandwiched either side of an FA Cup home tie against Championship Reading.
