Brentford youth stars ‘spat at by fans’ and targeted by coins after new kit idea

Brentford youth team players were once spat at by fans and had objects thrown at them after being asked by the club to model a unique new kit around Griffin Park.

The kit was due to go on sale at the final game of the 1998/99 season against Luton Town and was shown off before an earlier clash against York City.

Flagged by Tim Street to The Guardian back in 2018, fans were asked to give their support for the new strip as youth-team players were sent on a lap of the pitch.

Future first-team star Michael Dobson and his team-mate Lee Tunnell were sent on wearing the kit in which the traditional red-and-white stripes separated by a black spray-paint effect.

Dobson walked round the stands to a chorus of boos with fans chanting 'red and white, red and white' – unsurprisingly, the kit was never seen again.

Dobson went on to play over 200 times for the club before joining Walsall, proving that he didn't take the boos too personally despite his age.

Replying to a Twitter comment about the kit back in 2020, Dobson wrote: "Yes, I remember it well.

"The kit didn't go down well and we had objects thrown at us and even spat at. Not pleasant for two youth team players at the time."

Adding: "It didn't bother us too much, we laughed it off.

"It was crazy that some people wanted to show their disgust but didn't think about the ones actually wearing the shirt when hurling coins at us."

Brentford, who are now in the second Premier League season, have been praised for their current home strip having opted to keep it for two campaigns.

The decision came to allow fans to wear replicas for longer than usually without having to buy a new one while helping the environment by not producing more.
