Bruno Fernandes: My style is 'close' to Man United legend Paul Scholes

Bruno Fernandes admits his style is ‘close’ to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes as he labels Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo his ‘favourite player’

  • Bruno Fernandes has enjoyed a promising start to his Manchester United career
  • The 26-year-old has scored 18 goals in 33 matches for the Red Devils so far
  • Fernandes has praised two United legends – Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Ronaldo is Fernandes’ favourite player while he thinks Scholes is similar to him

Bruno Fernandes has paid tribute to Manchester United club legends Paul Scholes and Cristiano Ronaldo after a stellar start to life at Old Trafford.

The attacking midfielder is one of the first names on the Red Devils team sheet after being a regular goalscorer in his first 10 months at Old Trafford following his £67million from Sporting Lisbon in January.

The 26-year-old claims that his own goalscoring exploits remind him of United legend Paul Scholes, who also wore the number 18 shirt for the Premier League giants during his playing days.

Fernandes told the United Podcast: ‘For me, maybe I’m closer to Paul Scholes. (He) was a guy who likes to be in the box, who likes to give an assist, who likes to score a lot of goals.

‘I think Scholes was one of the best midfielders in the world. For England, a lot of people talk about Frank Lampard because he scored a lot of goals of course, one of the best in England too, you have Steven Gerrard too.

‘But I think Scholes is the one who makes more difference than anyone else. In the last generation, those three were the three best ones, and for me Scholes was best.’

Since moving from Portugal to Manchester, Fernandes has scored 18 goals in 33 matches for the Red Devils – including six goals in eleven matches during this campaign.

The midfielder is the latest in a long line of Portuguese stars to have played in the red half of Manchester, the most famous being current Juventus and Portugal national team forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

During his six-year stay at Manchester United, Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 matches, including 42 successful strikes in the 2007-08 season as United won the Premier League and Champions League titles.

Fernandes, who now plays with Ronaldo in the Portuguese national team, claims that he has tried to copy the striker’s mentality over his career.

The midfielder added: ‘Everyone knows Cristiano was my favourite player. I think it was a little bit of everything.

‘It was the way he worked every day, the mentality he had, the capacity he had to give 100 per cent in every game at a high level. For me it was like a motivation, like you always have to do better.

‘He was scoring goals every game, but he was still trying to improve. My mentality comes a little bit from understanding what sort of player you want to be.’
