Chelsea and Liverpool are both set to miss out on January transfer target Konrad Laimer after the Austrian reportedly chose Bayern Munich as his next club instead. The 25-year-old’s contract at RB Leipzig expires at the end of the season giving him the option to leave for free – but he has rejected a move to the Premier League, deciding to remain in Germany instead.

Laimer has made 167 appearances for Leipzig since joining the club from sister team RB Salzburg in 2017. The player has suffered a range of injury issues during his time in the Bundesliga and has been particularly badly hit this season. He has played just 10 games in all competitions during the current campaign after suffering a knee injury in September and he is not expected to return until the new year.

The Austrian’s contract situation has made him a key target for clubs around Europe as teams look for a cut-price option to improve their midfield options. The 24-time capped international is equally comfortable at right-back making him a tactically flexible option for clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea.

Bayern Munich are another team who have been constantly credited with an interest in his services and it appears they may have won the race for his signature. Journalist Christian Falk reports that Laimer wants to join the Bundesliga champions as a free agent in the summer and has even explicitly rejected a move to Chelsea in order to ensure it remains an option.

The midfielder was close to a move to Bavaria in the summer but Leipzig rejected all three bids from Die Roten towards the end of the summer transfer window. The club hoped he would move abroad instead but his heart appears to be set on Bayern and they now face losing him to their Bundesliga rivals for nothing instead.

The player opened up on the move falling through earlier this year, with the 25-year-old keen to stress his focus remained on the task at his current club.

“I was ready to make the move in the summer,” he told Servus TV. “It was very close, but I didn’t get the green light from Leipzig.

“On the one hand, it’s nice because I’m an important player. On the other hand, it’s difficult, because you think a lot. But I’ve come to terms with it. Life goes on. I’d rather concentrate on the here and now. If you think too much, you lose sight of what’s most important.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Laimer will sign on the dotted line at Bayern Munich but it looks increasingly likely that Liverpool and Chelsea will not bring him to the Premier League.
