Chelsea boss Frank Lampard clashes with board over Declan Rice transfer plan

Chelsea: Should Lampard be given more time to succeed?

Chelsea have been long-term admirers since his rise at West Ham, and Frank Lampard is a big fan of the 21-year-old who was released as a youth player by the Blues. It is understood that Chelsea are keen to resign Rice, but the Blues boss have several concerns about the defensive midfielder.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has reportedly clashed with the board over signing West Ham star Declan Rice.

Former Blues academy prospect Rice has developed into a fine defensive midfielder in east London, and is now being linked with a return across the capital.

It is thought that Chelsea have been tracking Rice for some time since his rise, and Lampard is a big fan of the 21-year-old.

However, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Stamford Bridge board have reservations over the England international.

It was claimed during a recent Q and A that the Blues board are unsure whether he is of the required quality to make the step up to a Champions League-level side.

There are also concerns over the hefty price tag West Ham slapped on Rice’s head, though that did seem to be lowered last summer.

Lampard remains under huge pressure in the Chelsea hot seat after losing four of his last seven matches.

But former Blues boss Avram Grant, who coached Lampard during his prime years at Chelsea, insists the ex-midfielder has what it takes to turn things around in west London.

“About the current situation I can say only this. You need to be strong when things are not going well, when things are going well everyone is a genius and knows what to do,” Grant said in an Instagram post.

“But in the situation like this when things aren’t going well you need to be strong, look for solutions and show a lot about your character.

“What I can say to Frank and the others at the club is be patient, and more than this do whatever is necessary to do that’s for sure. Two things: never lost it even when things are going well, don’t lose your fighting spirit at the highest level.

“And second, don’t lose what you have here [points at head] you need to think right and look for solutions. If you do that then everything will be okay because the quality is there and there is a potential like there was [at Chelsea] in my time.”
