Chelsea chief Marina Granovskaia has promised Olivier Giroud a move away from the club this summer – despite handing him a new one-year contract last week.

The Blues raised eyebrows aplenty by announcing that Giroud, 34, had put pen to paper on a contract extension just weeks before his current deal was set to expire.

Having fallen out of favour under Thomas Tuchel in the second half of last season, the France striker was widely expected to depart Stamford Bridge upon the expiry of that deal.

Nevertheless, reports in Italy suggest he is still set to leave Chelsea this summer regardless of the extension.

Calciomercato claim Granovskaia made a promise to Giroud that he would be free to leave the club even though he is still under contract until 2022.

The decision to activate his one-year extension very much suits both parties, as Chelsea will now receive a fee for the ex-Arsenal frontman instead of releasing him on a free.

AC Milan are understood to be leading the race for his signature, although they were initially keen to bring him to the San Siro on a free transfer.

That of course is no longer a possibility, yet having given Giroud her word that he would be allowed to depart this summer Granovskaia will likely have to accept a cut-price deal.

Milan are reportedly prepared to hand Giroud a two-year contract worth £4million plus bonuses.

The Blues star is said to have made up his mind about joining Stefano Pioli's side a number of weeks ago, a move which could see him reunite with Fikayo Tomori.

Tomori is close to sealing his own permanent switch from Chelsea to Milan after spending the second half of last season on loan at the club.

The 23-year-old defender's loan contract included a £25million option-to-buy clause which Milan are understood to be triggering.

As well as Tomori and Giroud, the Italian club are also said to be interested in prising Hakim Ziyech away from Stamford Bridge on loan this summer.
