Reports in Italy claim Chelsea would consider offering Juventus Timo Werner plus cash for Matthijs de Ligt. The rumour mill has already restarted less than two weeks after the summer transfer window closed and it appears the Blues are still focused on signing a centre-back to bolster their ranks.

Chelsea pursued a deal for Jules Kounde in the final days of the window and they put a big offer on the table for the 22-year-old that was rebuffed by Sevilla.

The European champions were told clearly by Sevilla director Monchi that they must meet Kounde’s full release clause to complete a deal.

The Blues then walked away from the table and it appears they are now already eyeing alternative options.

Kounde was understood to be furious that Sevilla blocked the move after telling the club he wanted to move to west London.

Now he may have been denied the move for good with Calciomercato in Italy now reporting Juventus defender De Ligt is of interest to Chelsea.

The Dutchman’s move to Juventus has failed to elevate his career to the next level and now there is a feeling he could depart Turin within the next few transfer windows.

Calciomercato claim Chelsea would be willing to offer around £15m plus Werner for the centre-back, although the reliability of those reports remains unclear.

Thomas Tuchel is clearly a fan of Werner, who was linked with a host of other European clubs this summer.

It was even claimed that Chelsea had offered him to Borussia Dortmund as part of a potential player-plus-cash deal for Erling Haaland.

Juventus need cash as they look to complete a serious overhaul and De Ligt is one of only few players within their squad, who is still of significant value.

Chelsea are on the lookout for defensive reinforcements following the sales of Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma this summer.

That said, the club’s need for a new centre-back has been reduced by the emergence of Trevoh Chalobah.

The Blues academy product, who impressed on loan at Lorient last season, has already featured for Chelsea this season in the Super Cup and Premier League.

He has saved the Blues millions in that department but Tuchel is still expected to add some more quality to his backline in the near future.

Furthermore, Thiago Silva’s current deal is only set to run until the end of the campaign after he signed a contract extension at the end of last season.
