Chelsea star Marcos Alonso set to seal exit after aiming dig at Frank Lampard’s side

Chelsea: Lampard admits lethargy in Arsenal defeat

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso looks set to seal a move to Atletico Madrid when the January transfer window opens. The left-back is reportedly on the brink of a six-month loan move to Diego Simeone’s side after his Blues career fizzled out.

Chelsea are keen to move on Alonso after spending £50million to sign Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell in the summer, with Emerson Palmieri also ahead of him in the pecking order.

Alonso has not played for Chelsea since the 3-3 draw against West Bromwich Albion on September 26 and has been frozen out of the picture by manager Frank Lampard.

The 30-year-old angered Lampard after trying to watch the second half of the game at West Brom on the team coach, rather than with the rest of the substitutes, after being hauled off at half-time with the Blues 3-0 down.

Chelsea fought back with three second-half goals to draw the game and Alonso has not been seen in any competition since.

Lampard was furious with his behaviour and, with two other left-backs to choose from, has effectively ended Alonso’s involvement with the first team by not picking him.

Chelsea have previously received interest from Juventus and Inter Milan in the Spaniard, with former Blues boss Antonio Conte keen to take him on loan at Inter, but no deal was ever forthcoming.

According to The Athletic, any transfer has been stalled by Chelsea’s asking price of £20m for a player who will still have two years left on his contract at the end of this season.

However, the club appear to have found a way to shift him, with Spanish outlet El Chiringuito reporting, via Tutto Mercato, that Atletico Madrid have agreed to take Alonso on a six-month loan deal which will see the La Liga leaders pay 50% of his wages.

The report states Alonso will fly to Madrid later this week to complete the move, meaning his last action off the pitch with Chelsea could be a bitter one, after his social media activity caused controversy over the weekend.

Alonso, who was once again not in the matchday squad for the match against Arsenal, has not helped his status by liking an Instagram post from Chelsea’s account which detailed their disappointing 3-1 defeat by the Gunners.

Had his relationship been more positive with Lampard, Alonso could conceivably have resurrected his Chelsea career, with Chilwell dealing with an ankle injury.

The former Leicester left-back did play 90 minutes against Arsenal, but may be rotated for Emerson for the visit of in-form Aston Villa this evening.

The match is an important one for Lampard, with Chelsea having suffered three defeats in their last four Premier League matches to move down to eighth place.
