Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has backed Timo Werner to come good at the club, despite a rocky start to his career in England. Romelu Lukaku’s club-record arrival has complicated matters for Werner, who faces a fight to return to the forefront of Thomas Tuchel’s attacking plans.

Werner’s debut season at Stamford Bridge wasn’t as disastrous as many construe, scoring 12 goals and assisting as many in 52 appearances.

He was the Blues’ top scorer and assister in a campaign where they lifted their second-ever Champions League trophy.

But Werner faced significant criticism for his wastefulness in front of goal, also backed up by numbers.

The Germany international’s total tally of 12 goals for Chelsea is dramatically lower than his xG of 18.7.

Johnson believes Werner has a future at Chelsea but needs to deliver sooner rather than later to remove the pressure from his shoulders.

He told bettingodds.com: “I know he gets a lot of stick, but I actually think Timo has a future at Chelsea.

“I think his issue is that he’s so desperate to do well that he just tries too hard. Once he starts banging in a few goals, then I think he will still come good.

“The way football is now though, you don’t get much time so he’s going to have to start delivering soon to release the pressure on himself.”

Werner’s chances will become more limited this season, though, following Lukaku’s £97.5million summer return from Inter Milan.

The 28-year-old has started his second life at Chelsea in stunning fashion, scoring four goals in four games.

He most recently headed in the decisive goal as Tuchel’s side started their Champions League defence with a 1-0 win against Zenit St. Petersburg on Tuesday.

Lukaku has firmly cemented his spot as the focal point of Chelsea’s attack, meaning Werner must compete for a place in one of the inside forward positions.

He’s competing with a freakish array of options in Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic.

Werner could be down the pecking order, having made just two appearances from the bench since starting against Crystal Palace on the Premier League opening weekend.

He came on in the 90th minute against Arsenal and the 82nd minute against Aston Villa, whilst Lukaku started and scored in both.

Fans will also feel he has a future at Chelsea, given he’s still only 25, but Lukaku’s presence has demanded quick improvement.
