CHRIS SUTTON: James Maddison is perfect for England… his displays for Leicester City have earned him a start against Montenegro despite his controversial casino visit
- James Maddison was seen in a casino during England’s loss to Czech Republic
- But the Leicester star should be judged by his excellent form on the pitch
- Gareth Southgate should start him in England’s next game against Montenegro
- Youngster Maddison recognises his behaviour was silly and regrets his actions
Gareth Southgate would be cutting off his nose to spite his face if he held a grudge against James Maddison over his casino visit and did not pick the Leicester midfielder for England later this month.
The 22-year-old deserves to start against Montenegro, even if he did himself no favours in the last international break.
Maddison was pictured gambling while England were losing to the Czech Republic, having withdrawn from Southgate’s squad due to illness.
England boss Gareth Southgate should pick Maddison for the upcoming Montenegro game
Maddison has been excellent for Leicester this season as the Foxes hunt for a top four place
He will know it was silly behaviour and I’m sure he regrets it. If there was a television in that casino, Maddison would have seen Chelsea’s Mason Mount being used as a No 10. That should be Maddison’s spot.
Or if Southgate prefers to use a No 8, Maddison should get the nod for that job.
Judge him by his performances on the pitch, not a daft decision off it.
Maddison has to play for England — ahead of Mount, who I rate highly, and ahead of Jack Grealish, who Southgate has been to watch at Villa Park. Leicester’s creative midfielder deserves his first cap.
