Clip of Martial during Man Utd’s win over Newcastle supports Shearer’s criticism

Anthony Martial failed to find the net during Manchester United’s win over Newcastle on Sunday after he was criticised for a lack of movement by Alan Shearer.

The Toon hero knows a thing or two about scoring goals in the Premier League, and he is not yet sold over whether the France international should play as a centre forward.

Martial, 25, has managed only four goals in the league this season from 20 appearances, five less than he had managed at the same stage of last season.

A clip from his latest appearance has now caught the eye of United supporters, with many believing that he could’ve showed more desire to get into the best position to score.

As Daniel James worked hard to beat his man and get in a cross towards the near post, Martial jogged steadily into the box and only jumped forward after the goalkeeper had stopped the ball.

Shearer had said on Match of the Day: “Only four leagues goals this season, not enough movement certainly not desperate enough to score goals.

“I don’t think it means enough to him to go and put that ball into the back of the net.”

Before adding: “He’s the one that says he wants to play centre forward and he deserves to be in there, His numbers have to be a lot better if he wants to play in that position.”

One United fan said: “He’s literally jogging in a straight line not even trying to make any sort of run.”

A second added: “It’s just lazy from him even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was scolding him from touchline.”

A third continued: “Fellaini had more movement than him.”
