Cristiano Ronaldo shows Solskjaer he was wrong to make Bruno Fernandes decision

Cristiano Ronaldo has shown Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's persistence to stick with Bruno Fernandes as penalty-kick taker was wrong after the 36-year-old netted twice from the spot on Tuesday night.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored a hat-trick as Portugal put five past Luxembourg in Group A of the European World Cup Qualifiers.

Having been international teammates for almost four years, Fernandes and Ronaldo both now play for Manchester United following the latter's £12.5m move in the summer transfer window.

Known for his fierce spot-kicks, Ronaldo has been the 12-yard specialist at both Real Madrid and Juventus but has had to play second-fiddle to Fernandes since his return to England.

But at international level, the three-time Premier League winner is still tasked with penalty duty and made no mistake in the eighth minute and 13th minute as Portugal raced into a 2-0 lead.

There have been strong calls from the Old Trafford faithful for Ronaldo to step up as their regular spot-kick taker after Fernandes missed from 12-yards against Aston Villa.

The Red Devils have been awarded one penalty so far this season after Kortney Hause was adjudged to have handled a Fernandes cross inside the area.

But the United midfielder blazed the resulting spot-kick over the bar with the ball ending up at the back of the Stretford End.

Man Utd went on to lose the match 1-0 and Ronaldo has since been eyed by many fans as the one to step up from 12-yards.

Solskjaer may now have a key decision to make with Ronaldo scoring twice from the spot for Portugal over the international break.
