Declan Rice opens up on West Ham pre-season with old-school David Moyes

West Ham star Declan Rice has opened up about 'brutal' pre-season with 'old-school' David Moyes.

Rice gave an insight into West Ham's preparation for their second season in Europe. The Hammers thrilled fans with their European run to the semi-finals of the Europa League last season – and Moyes' 'brutal' pre-season could help them repeat their antics.

Appearing on Tubes and Ange Golf Life, Rice said: “It’s tough, it’s very tough, especially with Moyes. Oh he runs ’em, he runs us! Yeah, yeah (he’s proper old school). He’s got the stopwatches out, he loves a stopwatch, hill climbs, hill runs, triple sessions, double sessions.

“Obviously I was away with England so I missed the first two weeks of pre-season… and speaking to a few of the lads who were at St Andrews then went to France, by all accounts it was brutal.

“It’s pre-season so anything Moyes says goes really. Triple session, double session, gym, you just get on with it.

“He’s got some mad runs, they’re like so tough. He does one called the horseshoe – it’s like an old school one, it’s brutal! It’s in the shape of a horseshoe obviously and you’re running and you’ve got to do it like four times and halfway around your hamstrings are gone, it’s horrible, it’s brutal!"

Rice has been linked with a move away from the London Stadium, but the Englishman seems to be content with staying at the Hammers with their ambitious new side.

He told the club's website: “The last two seasons have been very good and above expectations. It’s only right now that we keep pushing and aim for even better.

“There is no point in standing still and being stale. West Ham is a massive club and, if we want to compete with the best, we need to keep improving and keep pushing on.”
